Collectively Unleashing The Rural Potential

‌

‌

Volunteer Focus

‌

National Volunteer Week is April 18-24, 2021 and it is a perfect time to remind ourselves why volunteers are so essential to GRO communities. All GRO community leaders volunteer their precious time to help advance the GRO agenda and build a better tomorrow for their communities. Of course, GRO leaders could not accomplish their mission without the help of community volunteers that lead support for specific projects and initiatives. This newsletter outlines ways to recruit volunteers and how to thank them for their work.

Recruiting Volunteers

Within each community, there dwells students, professionals and other motivated citizens that want to see their town realize its full potential. GRO provides the platform by which community members can contribute to their community.
As a GRO leader, when you are asking someone to volunteer or to spread the message about GRO, it is important to communicate:

  • How the volunteer's actions will HELP the GRO program and their community.
  • Define timeframe for the tasks, and provide the critical path, if applicable.
  • Provide appreciation for their contributions, small or big, to the GRO program.
‌
‌
‌

Saying "Thanks"

  • Submit a blog post to GRO detailing the volunteer opportunity, who participated, key outcomes, and photos from the event.
  • Host a virtual or in-person event to thank volunteers for their contributions.
  • Ensure volunteers are achieving personal or professional goals through their volunteer work. Participating in GRO activities could be part of building their skills for bigger life goals.
  • Demonstrate how their contribution directly helped the GRO program and your community.

"We reach out to community groups, place our dates/projects in the local newspaper and also send information out via an email group that was set up from community members signing up to receive information while completing a community survey. We currently have 6 of our 8, 2021 months, filled with volunteer groups and are now lining out projects for each month."

"Be able to tell our story with passion so others feel that you believe in what you are doing. Not all agree with this thought, I believe that before I begin recruiting I must have done the work or be willing to join in. The real wisdom is to understand that recruiting is a game of patience and persistence; tell your story wherever you are and let those who are interested come to you. When they come, you must be willing to let them take on a responsibility And finally, be selective. Not everyone who volunteers has the skill set for what you need, sometimes there is not a good fit...Pray for the right volunteers to come to you!!"

"Working with our incredible community you often find trying to find volunteers is difficult or the same people dedicate a lot of their time to volunteer. I think we continue to struggle with this, but I will say working with the GRO group has opened the door to talk to other towns and we have gotten some great ideas. Also working with social media and having the GRO platform it makes it a little easier to streamline. Lastly, meeting with our local core group twice a month has kept this on the forefront of growing our exposure, looking for time, talent and resources and our group is growing!"

"Eldon is blessed with many teams and organizations with hearts for service. Individuals join these groups to give back to causes about which they are passionate. The challenge is communicating across organizations so that efforts aren't unnecessarily duplicated. It is the GRO Eldon mission to become a communication hub regarding needs and resources in our community so we can all support one another and maximize the efficiency of our efforts. We saw great success with this in the Small Town Big Heart Month of Service where we were able to celebrate all the giving hearts in our community and share the news of the service they maintain throughout the year."

Quote

"Finding a good group of volunteers takes some time, but like a machine, we started out by looking for the inner working gears of the town that keep it going. These specific businesses, committees, organizations, etc. are the oil that keep our town working. They are the do'ers that have skillful insight into who, what and where. By approaching the leaders or owners (whom are already naturally highly motivated people) and offering a leadership role and chance to help better our town in which they have interest in, the answer is always an enthusiastic yes! The right people always want to help, have a responsibility and a role, they just need someone to point them in the right direction."
